Veterans Group Sues Santa Cruz County for Shuttering Popular Vets Hall

SANTA CRUZ – A Santa Cruz veterans group Thursday filed suit against the county, alleging the emergency closure of the Veterans Memorial Building by county officials in January was unwarranted and demanding the facility be reopened.

“They jumped the gun on this,” said Tim McCormick, vice president of the United Veterans Council of Santa Cruz County, which submitted the legal complaint. “There’s no need to close the building.”

The Vets Hall, a popular meeting place not only for local veterans but several community groups, was abruptly shut down Jan. 21 after county officials deemed it structurally unfit. The county-owned building, whose problems are still being evaluated, would likely topple in the event of an earthquake, officials said.

But several veterans groups dispute that assertion. A structural report commissioned by the United Veterans Council suggests the building’s issues are mostly cosmetic and that no imminent threat exists.
